Fight Club XXIII on June 17 at l’Olympia

MONTREAL, MAY 19, 2017 – It is with great pride that Eye of the Tiger Management (EOTTM) and InterBox unveiled today the full card for the 23rd edition of the Fight Club series of galas that will take place on June 17 at l’Olympia de Montréal. Boxers from both Quebec-based stables will yet again face challenges that match their ambitions on this evening which will be presented in partnership with Vidéotron.

The heavyweight from Trois-Rivières Simon Kean (9-0, 8 KOs), who was initially set to face Rogelio Omar Rossi (19-5-1, 12 KOs), will instead go up against Brazil’s Marcelo Luiz Nascimento (23-14, 20 KOs) in a 10-round bout for the IBO Intercontinental title.

“It was imperative for us that a belt be at stake for Simon’s fight, in order for him to get the opportunity to significantly move up the rankings and to make a name for himself at the international level. However, we had to change fighters because the opponent absolutely needed to be approved by the IBO in order to qualify for a title bout, which was the case with Marcelo Luiz Nascimento. He is an experienced and credible slugger, who has faced big names in the heavyweigth division including WBO World Champion Joseph Parker,as well as Andriy Rudenko, Mariusz Wach and Dereck Chisora. So this promises to be an action-packed fight,” said Eye of the Tiger Management President Camille Estephan with excitement.

One the most awaited bouts of the night is surely the one set to oppose the charismatic Yves Ulysse Junior (13-0, 9 KOs) to tough Filippino boxer Ricky Sismundo (31-9-3, 13 KOs), who Quebec boxing fans know well following his performances here, which allowed him to win against Ghislain Maduma and to come up with a tie against Dierry Jean.

Ulysse is well aware that his resounding March 11 victory against Golden Boy Promotions protégé Zachary Ochoa on the prestigious HBO network make him a target for every other boxer in his division. He will therefore be ready for Sismundo, stating that he is willing to accept every challenge that awaits him and to face every obstacle that stands between him and a world championship bout.

Steven Butler (18-1-1, 15 KOs) is looking to put behind him the dramatic events of his January 28 fight at Bell Centre, where he suffered his first defeat facing Ontario’s Brandon Cook. “I think everything happens for a reason in life even if a loss is always tough to swallow. This was a learning experience that was necessary but these are mistakes that I will not repeat in the future. I must prove myself once more and I will show that it is a new and improved Steven Butler that will be before you on June 17,” said the young Montreal-based boxer who will face Poland’s Damian Mielewczyk (10-3, 7 KOs).

One of the most technical and creative boxers in Canada, Mathieu ‘G-Time’ Germain (9-0, 5 KOs) will try a add a 10th win to his perfect record as he will face Spain’s Pablo Fuego (12-3, 2 KOs).This will certainly be the greatest test ever for the Canadian fighter who was named rookie of the year by boxing fans in 2015, and who is now into his second year in the pro ranks.

Sorel’s David ‘Les mains d’acier’ Théroux (11-2, 8 KOs) will return to the ring for the first time since he lost to Mexican veteran Jose Emilio Perea. Thanks to his attaking style that fans appreciate, the 23-year-old athlete has built himself a great reputation as a warrior who always gives a good show, similarly to the great Arturo Gatti. There is no doubt Théroux will give it everything he has on June 17 against Francisco Javier Perez (16-8-1, 12 KOs) in order to make sure his return ends up in victory.

For his part, four-time Canadian Champion Clovis Drolet (1-0, 1 KO), whose pro debut was quite spectacular as he came up with one of the quickest knock-outs of the year, will go up against Gustave Alberto Sanchez (13-15-1, 4 KOs), an experienced boxer from Argentina.

To kick off the evening, boxing fans will have the opportunity to attend the first fights on Quebec soil by three new InterBox recruits from Eastern Europe, all Anna Reva protégés. Artur Ziatdinov will be making his pro debut, as will Nurzat Sabirov, whose opponents remains to be determined. Featherweight Andranik Grigoryan (1-0) will face Ricardo David Ocampo (12-7, 7 KOs.) in a four-round bout at a weight of 126 lbs.
