Adonis Stevenson announced on social media that he will be facing Andrzej Fonfara on June 3. The fight will take place in Canada.
Stevenson wrote on his social media account – “It’s now official. June 3rd rematch against Andrzej Fonfara in Canada. The undercard will be interesting as well.”
These two first found in May 2014. Adonis Stevenson won via a unanimous decision, but it was far from an easy fight.
The fight actually comes as a surprise to many. It was being reported that Adonis Stevenson was negotiating with Seanie Monaghan. It was not real clear why the fight was not made. Joe Smith Jr., who knocked out Fonfara in the first round, would have been the logical pick to get the title shot. For some reason that fight apparently didn’t materialize.
Monaghan was not real happy with the fight not being made. He told ESPN “Well it seems I got jerked again. Fight with Stevenson is off. I honestly always kinda doubted it was gonna happen. Was he gonna fight an undefeated guy? No, he fights a guy he beat already who just got KO’d in one round. No wonder nobody respects this punk (expletive). Whoever I get next is in trouble.”
Adonis Stevenson has been widely criticized for inactivity and choosing softer opposition for his title defenses. In this case, he actually gave his mandatory step aside money so that he could fight someone else.
